New fave restaurant: Leong’s Legends in chinatown. Bitter melon, spare rib and preserved vegetable soup was very refreshing and not nearly as bitter as the name suggested. Fried oysters wrapped in egg, an omelette with spinach, onions, and the aforementioned oysters, topped with a sweet sauce, was a fascinating medley. The pork meatballs were a bit disappointing, being only one single giant meatball, quite flavoursome but still just a big stodgy lump of meat. The siu long bao (soup dumplings) however were amazing. Bursting with soup, and beautifully textured and sweet. And eight for five pounds is a pretty good deal.
Decor wise this is a far cry from the standard bright white chinatown place, with dark wood panelling, low wooden benches, and wicker lampshades hanging low over the tables.
I will definitely be back, still many more things on the menu to try, but my initial rating is a firm 8/10.
